Huawei P20 Pro Test: One Of The Best Smartphones Of The Moment

The new smartphone signed Huawei is the first to enjoy a triple camera module. At 900 euros, it rivals the Samsung Galaxy S9 + and iPhone X.

Stronger than Apple and Samsung. While both manufacturers offer smartphones equipped with a dual camera module, Huawei equips its P20 Pro with an additional sensor. The smartphone, released this April 5, is capable of making beautiful shots in black and white, as well as remarkable portraits. To spoil nothing, it is simply beautiful. Here are his strengths and weaknesses.

The strengths of P20 Pro

A plethoric photo offer

The three camera modules of the Huawei P20 Pro are not there for nothing. The first is able to ensure beautiful shots day and night, with excellent focus speed. The second integrates a monochrome sensor, which will get pretty black and white images. The third has a closer lens. A component that provides a zoom x3 with a background blur, ideal for portraiture. In use, the Huawei P20 Pro is simply stunning. Photo enthusiasts are entitled to greater possibilities than the competition, with exceptional image quality.

A notch on demand

The iPhone X stood out with its notch, which is placed at the top of the screen. Although this element of the design is not unanimous, many Android smartphone manufacturers are preparing to take over the idea. Huawei is the first of them. The OLED screen is stretched to a length of 19: 9. Nevertheless, the Chinese manufacturer thinks of those who want a more classic format. In the display settings, the user can choose to hide this notch by framing it with a black band. Malin.

 A real main button

By offering smartphones to edge-to-edge displays, Apple as Samsung had to sacrifice the main button. This is not the case of Huawei, who manages to integrate it at the bottom of the screen. The physical button also houses the fingerprint sensor, which is one of the most responsive markets. To unlock their smartphone, users will not have to change their habits. In addition, it is possible to use this button as a return button (thanks to a short press) and as a multitasking button (by touching it). A very useful function for one-handed navigation.

A superb design

Huawei follows the trend, with polycarbonate finishes. The effect is very similar to that of glass, involving nice reflections … with some fingerprints as a bonus. Overall, the P20 Pro is very comfortable to handle, with a thickness of less than 8 mm and metal slices. Beware, the device – which has a screen of 6.1 inches – remains more imposing than its rival Apple. This could be a problem for fans of compact formats.

A lower price than its competitors

The price of 899 euros makes the P20 Pro a smartphone of exception, which is not accessible to all. Yet, it remains economically more competitive than its two main competitors. The Samsung Galaxy S9 + is sold 959 euros. For its part, the iPhone X is marketed from 1159 euros.

The weaknesses of the P20 Pro

No jack

If Huawei follows the trend of Apple in terms of design, the firm also does in the field of connectivity. Like the latest iPhone, the P20 Pro is private jack. An element that involves the purchase of a headset or wireless headphones, inevitably more expensive. The manufacturer, however, provides an adapter to use conventional earphones. An accessory that will be quickly damaged or misplaced.

Non-expandable storage

Big consumers of movies and music like to rely on a microSD card to add some storage to their smartphone. Probably for technical reasons, Huawei sacrificed this port. In France, the P20 Pro has 128 GB of storage – 110 GB by counting the space dedicated to Android, which should be enough for the vast majority of users. But as Apple (again), this limit can not be exceeded.

Less powerful than its competitors

The processor Huawei P20 Pro is the same as the Huawei Mate 10 Pro, released late 2017. The chip is slightly less robust than those that equip the iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy S9 +. In use, the difference is barely noticeable. This difference could rely more on the duration, with possible slowdowns appearing as and when the use of the smartphone.

Our verdict

With the P20 Pro, Huawei makes a master stroke. The Chinese firm offers the most innovative smartphone of the moment, which enjoys a lower price than those of its competitors. As promised, the strength of the P20 Pro is its photo quality, but especially the very wide range of its possibilities in the field, that we like the portrait, the landscape, the color photo or the black and white photo. The real favorite of this beginning of the year.
