Why phone cables always die in the same spot

It isn't the wire. It's the inch next to the plug, and the fix is simpler than a new charger.

A drawer full of old phone cables, most of them frayed next to the plug.

You're in the car, the map is open, your exit is coming up, and the battery icon has gone red. You push the cable in and it charges. You let go and it stops. So you drive with one hand on the wheel and the other holding a cable at the one angle that still works.

Then there's the drawer at home: five or six dead cables, and if you pull them out, nearly all of them broke in the same place, right where the wire meets the plug.

That isn't bad luck, and it isn't you. It's the shape of the plug.

Across the Titan Power Plus store, 23,019 reviews average 4.7 stars. Here is what Titan learned about that inch of wire.

A straight plug is a lever

Plug a phone in on a nightstand and look at it from the side. The plug sticks straight out of the bottom like a handle. Every time you pick the phone up, roll over, or rest it on your chest, that handle bends, and the bend lands on the same inch of wire every time.

In the car it's the cup holder. In a bag it's the pocket seam. Sooner or later the wire inside that inch gives, the charge starts to flicker, and the cable goes in the drawer.

The cable that came free in the box has it worst: a straight plug and a thin rubber jacket.

Why a new charger doesn't fix it

When charging gets flaky, most people buy a new charger. But the charger was never bent. A thicker straight cable doesn't help much either: it has the same lever and the same weak inch, just in a nicer jacket.

The only fix that changes anything is to take the lever away. Buyers noticed it before any article did: 315 four- and five-star reviews on Titan's store name the right-angle head.

Turn the plug ninety degrees

Titan's Smart Cable PRO has a right-angle head at both ends. Plugged in, the head lies flat along the edge of the phone instead of sticking out of it, so there's no handle to bend.

Hold the phone while it charges, in bed or at the wheel, and the cord runs along the side of your hand instead of into your palm. In the last twelve months, 5,493 orders on Titan's store included one.

1. A head that lies flat

The 90-degree head is reinforced and sits flush against the phone. A case, a pocket or your own hand has nothing to lever.

It also means you can scroll in bed while it charges without the cord fighting you.

2. A braid where the rubber used to be

The jacket is braided, not the thin rubber that splits and peels on a free cable.

Magnets built into it keep it coiled, so it comes out of a bag as a cable, not a knot.

What the order book says

In the last twelve months Titan sent 17,427 of these cables. Of 5,553 orders with one since last November, 68 had any refund at all.

And 264 customers came back and ordered it again. Here is what buyers wrote on the product page:

One for the bed, one for everywhere else

A single Smart Cable PRO is $25.95 on Titan's store. The two-pack is $29.95 for two 4ft cables.

So one stays plugged in by the bed and the other lives in the car or the bag, and you stop carrying one cable from room to room. Or the second one goes in a stocking.

If your phone charges by USB-C

Choose your plug for the charger end, USB-C or USB-A, and your length, 4ft or 6ft. The phone end is USB-C.

Next time the battery goes red, the cable is the one part you don't have to think about.

It supports up to 100W on USB-C PD, and it comes with a 2-Year Warranty and 30-day returns.
